Christina (00:00.206)
Hi, welcome to a chat with heart podcast. I'm your host, Christina Martin. I'm a singer songwriter. I live on a dirt road in rural Nova Scotia with my best friend, Dale, and our Calico cat, Olivia. This podcast is totally just a chill chat with her. As soon as you tune in here, I consider you one of my little heartbeat listeners. I love sharing these personal stories and recording these episodes are great practice for me to try and calm the fuck down. and just be myself.

Christina (00:55.97)
Good day listeners, little heartbeat listeners. Before I get into this episode, which I am extremely pumped about, just a few little life and music updates. First up, if you are in or around Bedford, Nova Scotia, we've got a really sweet Valentine's Day house concert coming up. It's cozy.

There's great humans there. You can find all the details on my website. It's February 14th. That's right. My mom is coming out. Also big shiny tunes. Don't forget, get your tickets for February 6th and 7th. I'm so excited to be singing two songs at this great, amazing midwinter life-changing event. So if it's your jam, come into the Marquis Ballroom and being

completely surrounded by just a bunch of amazing humans who want to jump up and down and sweat and sing along to the big shiny tunes songs. Then come on, don't sleep on it. Just go get your tickets. And hey, Germany, the tour dates are officially up, including Berlin. It still feels a little surreal that we're going back. Just to say that out loud, I need to go book our flights and reserve a car.

The, yes, christinamartin.net tour dates. Go get your tickets, because some of these shows will sell out if not all. One more thing I want to share. So this year I'm trying this new thing. I started selling some of my clothes, mostly old show outfits. And by old, I mean they're usually brand new. Things I wore like once or not at all. And I'm on Poshmark. They are not sponsoring this. Although maybe I should approach them.

But Poshmark has been awesome. My friends told me about it, so I'm telling you about it. I think when I do choose to get new clothes in the future, I think that's where I'm going to do my shopping. But honestly, one of my goals this year has been to, it is to pay off my business debt. So debts I've incurred by touring or invested in my music so that I can keep kind of in great financial standing and continue making music and

Christina (03:19.72)
and just living a healthy, happy, stress-free life. So every dollar that comes from my Poshmark sales of my show clothes and whatnot goes back onto my debt. And it's been awesome. It's been empowering, it's working. Go check it out. There's some pretty sweet items on there, stuff that I definitely don't want to part with, but I will if somebody pays for it.

I mean, it's actually, it's, you know what mean? You have stuff in your closet and you're like, I cannot donate this. I love this. I'm way too attached to this. But when you have a goal, like something like paying off my debt is a priority. It could be something else. Maybe you want to go on a vacation, you know, like a once in a lifetime thing. And it's when you have this goal and you kind of have, you know, you're willing to like go of something or sell something in order to

do that for a price. It's kind of neat. Poshmark, I am up there. I should put a link on my website. I haven't done that yet, but I haven't really promoted it other than right now. Find me on Poshmark. Just search my name, I think. Yeah. So it's been good feeling empowered by that. It's to be on this sort of intentional path with money and momentum, paying down debt.

This guest today, folks, it's someone you already know. And it's someone I am incredibly fortunate to share my life and my music path with heart with. It's Dale, Dale Murray. Dale engineers his podcast. He's my best friend. He runs a studio out of our home in Port Howe, Nova Scotia.

What that means is he does music production working with not just me on my music, but other artists. come here. He does mixing. He explains that in this episode, what that is for some of you who may not know. But it's one of his passions. He loves mixing albums or singles. And he can do that remotely. So he can do that for artists anywhere in the world. Same with session work, playing guitar, dobro, pedal, steel, lap steel.

Christina (05:42.862)
He's incredible. And so yeah, he works both remotely and in person and he is the bomb. So visit his website. His website is dalemurray.ca and send him an email. His contact information is there. He's also on Instagram. He's got that incredible, you know, mix of taste, patience, deep musical instinct and experience.

that it just makes everything he kind of comes into contact with musically sound better. And I think everyone he comes into contact with typically feels better. He's great to have around. He's been busy in the wider world. He's featured on two Anne-Marie songs on her latest album, Here You Are. That album's celebrating her 80th birthday.

which is pretty wild. even cooler, he managed to coax Anne into singing backing vocals alongside her daughter Dawn on that record. A very special moment for Dale. And yeah, I hope you enjoy this conversation. It's pretty chill and it's full of little musical side roads, which is my favorite kind of chat. So here's my chat with heart with my best friend, Dale Murray.

Christina (07:16.876)
All right, you've got your red wine, I've got my tea, and we've got some questions from friends. Welcome to a Chat with Heart podcast for the second time, Dale Murray.

Christina (07:28.465)
you're chatty.

I thought you were going to go on. Season five. This is our fifth season.

day.

Christina (07:36.45)
Yeah, fifth season. Do you hear that? I swear to God we have mice.

No, it's a rattle. There's something in our dust.

thank God, okay. I thought you said it was a rat, because we did have a rat last winter.

Yeah, but that's not what that is.

The rat was not in the house, it was in the walls.

Dale (07:57.246)
Technically, that was in the- We never saw it.

I don't want people to have this visual mental image of us living in a house with a bunch of rats running around. we have, we keep a tight chip clean, clean chip here. It's clean. Rats can still be in clean.

Tate the chip.

Yeah.

Dale (08:18.766)
We live in the country. It's, you know, there's stuff.

That so that rattle.

Do you me to record that so people can hear what?

No, but it's distracting me. Okay, let's start with the question. So when you, I asked you if you wanted to come back. I've been asking you for years because your episode, episode one of a chat with heart podcast is, I think it's the second most listened to episode.

I thought it was the first most.

Christina (08:48.462)
No, think Michelin has beat you.

Well, that's fine with me.

Yeah, so that's a great episode to listen to as well. But after this episode, people are going to want to listen to our first episode, five, four years ago, five? What is this episode?

2020, we started this in 2020, I believe. And it's 2026. We've really streamlined the way we do this. mean, I remember working hours and hours on this thing when we first started and now we've really

got January too.

Dale (09:25.774)
I think we worked too hard on it, but...

Yeah, we cared too much, way too much.

Yeah. And we realize what works and what doesn't. And I think even some of the technology has changed. That's how long we've been doing it.

Let's talk about what didn't work. What did you change in terms of your process?

I kind of just streamline things where I have templates for intros and outros and music that goes in this and for the way that I treat your voice. And you do the editing because of the technology.

Christina (10:06.71)
and I do the editing now.

Christina (10:12.536)
I use Riverside FM now and it allows me to edit it and I try to edit it soon after I've recorded it because it's fresh in my mind and I kind of have a sense like, you know, I do listen back one time and do the edits quickly, but before, and here's the other thing, I give it an hour with a chat with my guests, it's an hour long.

That's just what I was going to say. The biggest thing that saved us time is that you've gotten better at interviewing. babe. Yeah, for sure. mean, the first couple episodes, was... Yeah, four hours, there was a lot of screaming into a mic and laughing, which is great. But I think you know now, there's no talking over...

Four hour long session?

Dale (11:04.842)
each other as much. mean, there's always going to be a little bit of that, yeah, you're just better at

Oh, thanks. I think we've both, yeah, like fine tuned our approach. you know, I used to spend, I used to have a lot of anxiety about it I really, I put a lot of time into researching my guests. I might have some questions in advance just so that I don't stress out because otherwise I will.

Yeah, I think in the old days, you had all these questions, like pages of notes and stuff. So when you actually went off script, you also felt the need to go back to those notes. So you've done, you know, half an hour or 45 minutes of like nothing that you had planned. And then you used to go back to the planned stuff. And then that's what I think brought it up to like three hour conversations.

Let's talk about the cat in life. Pre-cat, pre-Olivia, post-Olivia. wait, post means she's dead. She's not, right? Pre-Olivia, pre-cat, and then post, yeah. What do you think the differences are?

Olivia. Post getting Olivia.

Dale (12:16.684)
Hmm

Look at her licking her legs. Look at how big her paws are. She's right here.

Nobody can see that. the, the, well, I mean, that's kind of the beauty of cats is that they don't change things too much. They're not too intrusive and they do their own thing. I think that's why I like cats because that adds a bit of life to the house. You know, a lot of joy and love, but, but it doesn't change your life like a, like a dog does or.

or a child.

Yeah, you and I both don't really like things that too demanding on us.

Dale (12:59.082)
Yeah, and even when, you know, in the evening time when Olivia starts going, play with me, I need attention. I mean, I'll do it. I do. I feel a duty to play with her because she's always so good during the day and lets us kind of do what we do. So I figure, I think we need a little tussle time.

Tussle time with Dale and Olivia. Olivia loves her papa. Well, she hasn't treated him in my heart. I'll probably write some more songs about her. We have written some songs about her though with friends. There'll be more. I did write a song recently about, in my songwriting group, shout out to the Embroidery Guild.

Spread out, songwriter spread out all over the globe. Well, not all over, but like, I think the UK, definitely the US. I wrote a song about Olivia jumping on the wood stove.

Which she's done. Which she did. Yes.

She really burned her little bean pads on her.

Dale (14:15.086)
But she's really good about it. didn't, guess cats process pain differently than people. If I had done that, I would be complaining about it for a month.

But you wouldn't, but they don't, she did process it in a similar way to, whereas if you jumped on the wood stove when it was on, you wouldn't jump on again because it would burn your skin. she has done that as well.

Yes, she learned her lesson. In fact, I don't even think she remembered that the fire was on. So I think it was just a mistake. I think she knows not to jump on a hot stove. But, you know.

Anyway, great material for songwriting. Katz, Olivia in particular. What are you up to these days? What do you do when I'm up in my office working my part-time job?

specifically, or like today I was doing royalties, getting a hold of everybody. I've played on a lot of songs in the past couple years that I realized. I checked, there's, I think over, oh, there's over a hundred, but it's, and I think the last time I looked, the last time we updated our royalties was 2022 or 2023. So,

Christina (15:14.956)
Yeah, how many approximately?

Dale (15:33.634)
You know, three or four years, but. Yeah, there's some live stuff of yours that, that, that's in there as well, but.

100 songs since then?

Christina (15:43.292)
yeah, so like, let me just interject here and say that as performers, are, as background artists, background performers, so if you play a pedal steel on someone else's song, there's royalties for that if they get played out there in the world. There are royalties for the lead performer and the backing performer, the master rights owner, so you're submitting your songs to...

different organizations, I'm not going to go through the list of them. Yeah, I've been doing this for over a decade and I can always have to refer to

It's really boring and really tea

Dale (16:23.766)
Over a decade, two decades.

I don't know if I knew how to report all of my, or yeah, to submit all of my material for like to all the sites.

No, but I remember doing stuff with you and definitely before we moved into this house. 2010? 2010 or 10. That's well over a decade.

Over deck, Okay, you're right. Okay, so I still don't remember what each site, except for Socan, publishing and writing for LTs. That one's so easy. Love, love, it's fun. That one, a joy to report. And you know, we report our performances too through Socan. Super easy. It's great. There's other organizations. I'm not going to go into this. It's super boring. If you want me to...

Just.

Christina (17:13.388)
reach out to me and I'll share the doc that explains exactly what these organizations collect and how to submit your stuff and all the little tips and tricks that I've had to write down because I cannot remember.

Yeah, so the point is, that's what I was doing today, that's what we've both been doing. So other things have kind of gone to the side because if I start doing other things while I'm doing that, because I would rather do anything else. I actually vacuumed the whole house today only because I didn't want to.

This is my life. I distract myself with things because so many of the tasks that you do as a self-managed artist are not fun. like, in order to complete them, I need to be like, okay, when this is done, Dale's going to take me out for wings.

I need a reward. I need reward, yeah.

And even now, like, I'm starting to realize that reward should probably not be monetary, something that costs money. It should just be like a high five. Let's high five.

Dale (18:23.15)
We went for a walk today and I thought that was a nice, it wasn't a reward so much as we needed to get out of the house.

Yeah, we also ate way too many chicken nuggets that were basically just little pieces of fat. And we both wanted to fall asleep and we were like, how do we wake up because we have to rehearse? did that.

That's a big mistake. That really put a wrench in the gears.

Yeah, we... This is where we shot ourselves in the foot. We eat really clean, we take care of ourselves. So any piece of junk food we put in our bodies, we're fucked.

I think that was the reward you were looking for. It was like, I did a whole report here and now I deserve some really crappy food.

Christina (19:09.346)
Maybe kind of.

Anyway, so yes, but beside that, mean, a lot of my time is dedicated to making music still. so we've been working on some of your songs. Well, I should say our...

We wrote, we did some co-writing. did.

We were in, when we were in Austin,

I'd say more than, like a, more than we've ever done in one chunk together. That was the goal of going to Austin.

Dale (19:39.854)
Yeah. And I had a lot of stuff that I had written musically over the pandemic. I called them my pandemos. Yeah, nice. And there were a bunch that I used either for songs that I ended up co-writing with you or using it for television music that kind of... But yeah, it was just stuff that I worked on because there was nothing else going on.

at the time. now it's, well soon we'll see, some of these we'll see the light of day.

Yeah, we're working on, I hope, we're chipping away at some. putting out an Essentials album. It's called The Essentials. We couldn't call it Greatest Hits because we don't have any fucking hits.

But the reason for that is because we're going on tour in Germany. Possibly? Hopefully not, but we'll see. Yeah, in April. we wanted something... Yeah, and it kind of makes it easy to make set lists when you have like... are the essentials. And also the essentials are really...

or maybe see

Christina (20:45.154)
To celebrate.

Dale (20:58.518)
Essentials for us because they're the ones that kind of we always go back to because they're either We like fun to play. Yeah, they're fun to play or or people seem to like them

Or they may be the most streamed. It's only a couple. We're gonna release a new song we wrote down in Austin. It's called The Breeze. So that'll be ready and on that massive compilation. So wait for it. I don't have a launch date yet, definitely before April or in April. What's... So we...

But.

Christina (21:38.86)
Just let's remind my little heartbeat listeners though, what is it? Cause I think some people, you do a lot of things really well. And I think some people would be interested in knowing exactly what in your heart you want to be doing more of.

More of.

Like, what you re- what's... Like, I mean, I've been writing down, I've been think- having, like, ever since I was in my early 20s, I was very big on, like, taking the time of the year to go over what it is I really want to be spending my time doing. then all my other decisions for the year, whatever, kind of, it helps me stay focused and achieve those things.

It's just a habit, if I don't do it, I get really lost and off track and can get into trouble. It's not saying you're like that, but I do think it helps kind of. And I don't know if the universe is working in our favor or not, but it feels like the universe appreciates it when we know what we want. What do you want? You want me, you already have me, but...

Yeah, I'm a pretty simple man. Yeah, things haven't really changed for me. I found my passions pretty early. And you actually really helped bring about a lot of things that I didn't know could be a

Dale (23:22.208)
a job or a career, like making records for people. Like you were my first client.

Yeah, well, you fooled me at the time. You were a full blown producer.

Well, you know, I had some experience, but yeah, I my interests and stuff don't change, but I think I get more passionate about what I do as I go along and hopefully get better. And as you get better, you get more excited about it. So yeah, recording records is always my number one, I think, and mixing.

Did a great job.

Dale (24:07.118)
mixing for those that don't know is when you record a record, you sort of have to balance the sounds, kind of shape the sounds and put them all together into a nice cohesive package. Yeah, you know what? What I was thinking, I was thinking this during Christmas,

Making muffins.

Dale (24:36.366)
I was doing a puzzle with your mom and a bunch of cats. A bunch of cats. And, but you helped a bit. Yes, you did well. But, um, it, it, to me, it was kind of like mixing a song. Like you get pulled into it as much as, as I do when I'm mixing a song, but it's also taking pieces and seeing where they fit. some of them with mixing it's like with a puzzle.

helped.

Dale (25:05.322)
all the pieces are going to fit. Sometimes with mixing some of the pieces don't, you have to know when to throw those pieces out. Exactly.

This is going to be the theme for my whole year of episodes.

Yeah, yeah, it's true. And know when to make new pieces that will fit, you know? Anyway, I mean, I'm not...

Wait, did you make new pieces for the puzzle?

Not the puzzle, the mixing. OK. The puzzle is set. There's you can't. That's that is the one difference. Thank you. I know this is confusing anyway.

Christina (25:37.528)
for explaining this.

I don't know what your passion is anymore. you in, is it puzzles or is it mixed?

puzzles. That's all I'm going to do. Just cat puzzles for the next 30 years of my life.

Okay.

Christina (25:54.016)
You and my mom can hang out a lot more then. Can you get paid for making puzzles? That's something that you can ask Google. I'm not sure. You can get paid to do a lot of weird things.

Can we get paid for that?

Dale (26:10.71)
Maybe if we did, had like a channel, YouTube channel of us doing puzzles.

You know what? That's actually a fucking, that is a great idea. Forget about my dream to have workout videos and write the music for that on my channel. I'm, although we're probably going to do that. That's a fucking awesome idea. Yeah. we time lapse it or?

I think we'd have to time lapse certain parts because there's a lot of time where it's just...

Would we take live questions and tips?

You mean tips is money or? Yeah, money. Yeah, of course. That's how you... Anyway, that's not gonna...

Christina (26:50.67)
Interesting. Well, there's that rug. There's a rug cleaning channel.

I got, we both got so into the, who told us about that? Somebody, maybe I did.

I thought you just stumbled upon it. thought you had a rug fit. A dirty rug fit.

People don't know. It's literally somebody cleaning the most disgusting rug. what kind of... Yeah, and they just kind of go over it. And then you think they'll go over it 20 times and then you think it's clean. Then they do it again and it gets cleaner. And you're like, my God, I can't get any cleaner. Then they do it again and it gets cleaner.

covered in mud or

Dale (27:33.728)
It's cleaner and cleaner until somehow they know that it's as clean as it's going to be. But it's really relaxing. Yeah.

totes.

When you're smoking pot.

Yeah, I was just gonna say, we should, mean, mushrooms might be interesting to do while watching that. Listen, I reached out to a bunch, I just, an hour ago I texted a bunch of friends and asked them to send some questions in for this episode. So I haven't listened or read any of these. So let's start with one...

Yeah.

Christina (28:14.446)
Louise, our friend Louise over in the UK.

What is your absolute favourite English, British, United Kingdomish food? And that's for both of you.

Mmm.

Do Christina say Birmingham with an English accent? Because I love that so much.

Birmingham. Did I say that right? Birmingham. Birmingham.

Dale (28:41.016)
him.

Dale (28:45.198)
No, it's no ham. There's no ham. Even though there is a ham in there.

Birmingham.

Have you

Birmingham. It's not so hard, that one. You know what is hard though? Wooster. That one, that was... Wooster. Yeah, because it's spelled Wooster.

I mean like Worchester Shire sauce? Is that where that's from?

Dale (29:14.926)
I'm gonna say yes. Oh god. Um, but what was the question? Oh, I'm gonna say wuss wuss. don't know how to say it. That's not bad, you know, I do like that.

Food.

Christina (29:25.442)
We're just your tires.

Christina (29:30.926)
I'm trying to think. Like, to be honest, there's not a lot. I will be honest, there's not a lot of food that we... You know, we're... We do love going to the &S stops or those grocery... Or those, yeah, grocery stores.

The...

Dale (29:52.36)
Yeah, along the motorway because that's where we are most of the time when we're touring there.

But I don't think that's very British. think that's just like, like I like getting their healthy food there.

British, I mean those pies and stuff, but we were eating more vegan the last time we were there. we didn't get to get into those meat pies and all that. I can't do that because I'm gluten free. because the British diet is not really made for... food.

time. Maybe.

Christina (30:25.678)
No, wait a second. I just had some cheese from Louise. What's the name of the place? I just threw out the roof. I bought it at Costco.

Is it the one with the wax?

So, Wensleydale.

got my name in it.

Wensleydale. Wensleydale. Good cheese. Good cheddar cheese. Not sure of the other kinds. I had like a caramelized onion one today and it was not good, but the old cheddar. Yum. Stressful. Question one. Check. Let's see. Ryan's question. boy. this is amazing.

Dale (31:01.066)
Question one.

Christina (31:12.684)
Have you watched Heated Rivalry and is it making you gay-er? So we, I just- I have not been in touch with our friend Ryan.

Does he know that we- NO-

Okay, let me answer part of this because you finished it. I fell asleep last night. We had been watching it. Yeah, there's only six episodes. And so I don't know how it ends. So we're not going to talk about that. I'm going to watch the rest of it. And for people who don't know, it's about hockey players. Based on a book. Based on a book about hockey players. And there are...

Just like the last two days. Keough recommended it.

Christina (31:54.776)
There's some relationships, some gay relationships. Very closeted, knowing these players have not come out. Seems that most of the guys are straight on these teams. Go ahead.

but very closeted.

Dale (32:07.662)
And has it made me gayer? Yeah, maybe... Maybe 8 % gayer.

And I would say because I'm watching super hot men.

It's made you less gay. So, yeah, you know But that being said, I said this, I told you last night, the guys in it aren't really, I don't think would be my type if I were.

Yeah, me either. I'd be paranoid that I have to like go to the gym for three hours a day or know.

I told you I have about six less packs than they have in their six packs. They have eight packs.

Christina (32:50.434)
They do have apex. are very beautiful. Very beautiful. So yes for Dale, no for me.

And anyway, they wouldn't be.

It's funny that he brought that up. Yeah.

That is interesting. Good question. Thanks, Ryan. Okay. You ready for another question?

Yes. Sorry, I forgot I was doing that. I'm usually sitting here engineering while you ask other people questions. I was like, waiting, but you're talking to me. Yeah, go ahead.

Christina (33:16.908)
You forgot you were here?

Christina (33:25.55)
there's a lot that have come in. Okay, first question is from Chris DiCchio. I haven't listened to any of these.

This is the third question.

Christina (33:38.378)
Imagine someone's going Christmas shopping for you. What are some things that they could get that you would really love?

No, they just, the questions kept going. I had to stop. No, was Stephanie's next. So that was a great question. And we just had an incredible Christmas.

What

she has more than one

Dale (34:01.376)
We had several incredible fake Christmases. We call them fake Christmases because it's not actually on the 25th of December. But yeah, we had a great one with Christa and she was in Ali. But Christa was so thoughtful. And I mean, I'm pretty easy to buy. I'm just grateful if someone thinks about me.

Anything about that? Would have been nice if those singing bowls I ordered came in, but they never will.

Yeah, Christina apparently ordered some singing bowls for me. And it wasn't something that I knew that I would want until we went to Austin. We were there in June and we went to see your friend Jennifer and went to this, what would you call that tower thing that we went to? It was like a...

My friend Jennifer.

Christina (34:59.798)
A tower?

Like a, I want to call it a Shambhala center, but it's not. It's like a sacred place people gap. I don't know. Oh, you mean the pyramid? It was a pyramid where Jennifer does, like some people, they do retreats and they do yoga and they do, Jen does sound baths and...

The pyramid thing, yeah.

Dale (35:20.812)
So the sound baths in this pyramid building that she brought us into, you know, after dark, it must have been pretty late because it was summertime. And she did this little sound bath for us. This is a quick one. And I mean, I love sounds. I love, you know, capturing sounds. But when you're in that environment in this really cool, mean, the sound of the room itself was great.

having this sound bath with these different singing bowls was really cool. And then we ended up going to do a photo shoot later where she did even more of a sound bath for us. So I thought, that'd be nice to have some singing bowls. Maybe we could use them for some sort of project. And you ordered me one and it never came.

some kind of project.

Christina (36:13.578)
came and I was hoping it would so that I could get the full refund because it was so late and then babe I just canceled it because I don't think they were gonna send it and I wanted to cancel my prime membership anyway. So anything is your answer for Christmas. Next question.

Christina hanging out at home, it's a nice day, and you're gonna make dinner, and you guys just having a lovely, fun day together, because you're so in love and best friends. What album are you playing for Christina to put her in a good mood, and what are you making her for dinner? And are you making dessert?

I love that. Okay, I'm going to start backwards. I'm not going to make dessert. What? I don't make-

You make that avocado chocolate banana.

One dessert. You know what? That's what I'm gonna make you. No, I'm gonna make you the avocado chocolate mousse. I love that. Because that's the only thing I can make. can make... Yeah. And sorry, so that was the last one. Oh, what will I make? I mean, right now we're getting a HelloFresh.

Christina (37:19.182)
Okay.

Christina (37:22.766)
and in the mood.

Christina (37:29.505)
area.

Christina (37:37.761)
So pretend.

But if we don't have that, we didn't have that, I would probably make spaghetti and sauce because that's what I'm, yeah. Sorry. meats. Yeah, that's what I make. And what would I play? I would probably play, to get her in a good mood, I would play Tina Turner. Yes!

What about the meatball?

Christina (38:04.634)
Yes! Bing bing bing bing bing! my god, you just hit all my spots. Thank you, I love you. Jessica Ray! that was Steph Purcell. Thank you, Steph. See you this weekend. This is Jessica Ray.

Yeah, I did.

Dale (38:21.806)
Hey Dale, it's Phil Prieber. I have one question for you. Many questions for you, but this one is if you couldn't have been a musician, what would you like to have been?

That's interesting because on our walk today, was, so that, Bill Preeper is in, he plays in a band with Jessica Rae. They write songs together. They, they perform together and

Bill shut up

Dale (38:55.286)
And I work a whole lot with those guys. And I love them.

We love them so much.

what would I be?

Yeah, on our walk today I was like, what else can you do?

Yeah. Well, I can't do much, but if I were a younger man starting out, I think I would have maybe, I don't know if even it was a thing back when I was a younger man, but I often thought about not being a naturopath. yeah. I would be well into my sixties.

Christina (39:29.966)
It's... Never mind.

Christina (39:35.8)
We don't know if you graduated high school, so...

I may not have the capacity to

I just got that moment of, God, hate, I eventually, I didn't hate going to school when I was younger. I know you had a rough time, but I did hate going, I did hate university and like tests and exams and the pressure, the costs and all that stuff. And so I just thought, it all came back to me in a second. I like, you don't want to do that. But I don't want to discourage you.

No, no, I don't want to change my career. if he's asking me the question, that is something I'm interested in. And I guess you don't always have to, the career that you pick doesn't always have to be something you're interested in. But I really have a hard time doing stuff that I'm not interested in. Yeah, me too.

I was going to say that I don't like, I don't mind doing things that I don't like, but I have to be, because there's stuff that you don't like about any career, Yeah, there's stuff that you don't like about any career and it's, but the interest has to be there, like some sort of interest. yeah.

Christina (40:54.202)
Here's a question from I think Sandy, Sandy McKay who also performs with Bill and Jessica. I think they're having a rehearsal tonight.

I'm going to say yeah, or they're drinking whiskey. Hi, Dale. It's Sandy McKay here. Hi, Sandy. If you could play with any band, who would that band be? What would you play with them? Question mark.

Dale (41:19.826)
Man, that's a tough one. Well, yeah, I'm going to say he's asking just any band.

Dead or alive?

Dale (41:34.956)
And what would I play?

I'm trying not to answer for you.

But you can. Well, the Beatles. yeah, yeah.

Or like Jeff Lynn, know, the Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac. Maybe you could list some newer bands. I'm not familiar with the new kids in town.

yeah, I...

Christina (42:02.318)
I don't know you've played with some awesome bands.

I have, yeah. I mean, I can't complain. There's been great bands that I've played with, but...

Springsteen.

Yeah, these are all...

Harry Smith. I don't know.

Dale (42:20.686)
Yeah, there's a lot. don't know. I'd love to play more steel in a band. And I have got to do that more recently. yeah, most of the time I'm playing guitar with people or going back and forth between guitar and steel. But think just sitting back on pedal steel, maybe a country band.

Milly Vanilli.

Christina (42:51.03)
yeah, that'd be hot. I'll write some more country songs if you want.

I don't know

Dale (42:57.358)
Well, I think we should do that anyway. I thought that was in the plan. It was. It is. That we would do a more country thing at some point. I think we both, at this point in our careers, have been like, whatever comes up, we'll... Let's just do it. Yeah, if we like it, then we'll do it. It doesn't have to be any...

We're learning a Prince cover right now. Anyway, I digress.

Dale (43:22.328)
Hi Dale, Mark Marshall. I'd like to hear a little bit more about the story with the time that you met and hung out with Ryan Adams. And I know you weren't hanging out with him directly, but you were hanging out with him backstage at a concert. So maybe just give us a little bit more details on that, please. Mark's a big Ryan Adams fan, as am I. Yeah, I...

You sure you don't- he doesn't want to know about my Brian Adams story?

He knows about the finance, so does everyone else.

Go ahead, Dale. Let's us here with your experience with Ryan Adams.

Well, mean, there wasn't so much of, he was so a little back, a little.

Christina (44:08.802)
Back check.

Just some information. I was playing with a guy named Hayden and we were touring in the States opening up for Julianne Hatfield who used to play in the Lemonheads and I was a big fan of and she was lovely. She was in a relationship with Ryan Adams at the time. So every night he would sort of be...

He was sort of there, just around backstage and stuff like that, but he was always in the shadows. Like he always managed to find a shadowy corner to sit in and not...

Do think he was going to recognized and approached and he was... Was he skin or light sensitive?

No, no, no

Dale (44:59.69)
I don't, you mean a vampire? Like a vampire. no, he, yeah, he just kind of kept to himself. And I don't know if he just didn't want to intrude, like, because he really was kind of the, he wasn't, there was no reason except for he was, you know, with Juliana at the time to be there. So maybe he thought I'm just going to stay out of the way and, and not intrude in this backst, because, you know, there's a lot of, Hayden, there was, you know, six of us.

And then her band, there's five. So there are a lot of people backstage. So maybe that was the reason, but he didn't really... Did you talk to Yeah, a couple nights. did. Just... Yeah, there was... Hello. There was a greeting of...

Was there any like high fives?

No, there's no high fives. Last night we played with him and I can't remember where it was, maybe Philadelphia or something, not played with him, but played with Juliana. He came out of his shell a bit and talked to us as we were loading out. But yeah, I mean, that was it. I had seen him a couple of times before that. The first time I went to England, I saw him play by himself in Manchester.

I that was it. think just seeing him live that time and then seeing him on that tour.

Christina (46:27.468)
Thanks, Mark. Great question. Ready for your next question?

Hi, Dale. It's Sandy McKay, Bill Prieper and Jessica Ray here. We want to know what you think the song, the Beatles song Norwegian Wood is about. Bill thinks it's about wood, but what happens at the end of the song? Dale, we want to know what you think. Thanks. What happens at the end of the song? Well, doesn't he, yep, Sandy. Doesn't he like sneak off and sleep in the bath? Isn't that what, like she, she goes to bed and he and John goes and sleeps in the bath. And then when he wakes up,

She's gone and he lights a fire. I'm assuming with Norwegian wood. I think that's what happens. Maybe I have to go back and listen, but.

We should both. I don't know the song.

He slept, he definitely slept in the bath. Okay.

Christina (47:20.43)
Amazing.

Here's another question do you have names for your guitars and if so, what are they?

names from it? No, I don't. I don't.

You have, pronouns.

for the guitars? Hmm. Interesting.

Christina (47:46.196)
I do. I say, she's been a great friend or...

I think that all my guitars may be male in my mind. I don't know why I say that. I'm trying to think of if I maybe have a female instrument, so to speak. You know, maybe that 12 string Duesenberg

And looking at her

Dale (48:20.051)
thing we have is... Yeah, think that might be a she or they...

Zell.

Christina (48:26.638)
my Star Player TV, not that I'm segueing into my gear that's up for sale. People have been commenting, are you leaving the business or are you quitting music?

Well, you're selling a lot of stuff, I can understand why.

I just came to realize that paying off my debt that I incurred because of my music at this point is critical and most important. And that I have a lot of nice stuff that I've, not too much, but like I'm not a collector, but the stuff I have is good gear. But if it's not being used and I'm sitting on debt, know, let's share the joy for a good price. but I think my guitars that I'm selling,

are both she her. They're two Duesenbergs. my ab also, I don't, I usually refer to her.

Yeah, you know what? think my dobro is a her. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know why I say that. Yeah, don't. Yeah.

Christina (49:32.75)
Great ass.

Stop talking about her like that. Laura Simpson has some questions for And thank you so much for all the questions so far, friends. What is Dale's dating advice?

dating if my god well it's even when i was single i didn't really date too much it was a different

You just what? Like, what did you do? You just hopped in the sack with your lady?

I in relationships for a long time. Maybe, yeah. And then I was on the road a lot.

Christina (50:06.542)
it serial monogamous?

Christina (50:14.594)
must have asked, like did you ever ask someone who you weren't with, you know, do you want to go?

Yeah. For coffee or? Yeah. But usually, like, if I were on the road and it was...

What's your like, what would you... You must have advice though, like if you're someone's wants to know how to behave or how to act.

Honestly, like, I don't know how people, I don't know how people date nowadays. hear, yeah, we have younger friends and it's the, know, I see, I sound like an old man speaking about this. is... Well, yeah. No, but it's really not my... Please, please save me.

Well, we are older. You look really young and...

Christina (51:02.702)
I'm gonna take this one over for you.

Just be yourself.

Oh, that's a good thing to do.

Yeah, I think it'll hurt in the long, in the short and long run if you don't just act like yourself and calm the fuck down and be 100 %

as honest as you possibly can be.

Dale (51:26.995)
Right. You think people find that attractive?

Yeah, I don't want to hang out with liars. I everybody kind of white lies now and then or like, someone's like, you don't want to, if you don't like somebody's earrings, you don't want to be like, I hate your fucking earrings.

No.

Dale (51:44.974)
But you don't, but you think a lot of people kind of want to impress people, know? Maybe not lie, but...

Yeah, don't go on and on and on. Just try to be yourself, but definitely don't talk too much. Unless it's like a conversation and ask a lot of questions.

Mm-hmm.

And if you're lucky, you'll get some questions back, but don't expect it. And then you can make a decision whether that's important to you or not. But I think be curious, be yourself, be curious, relax and listen to your body. okay, another question from Laura is, what do you think will bring world peace?

wow.

Christina (52:41.772)
What? That's a simple question, Dale.

is it? World peace? Well, I mean,

Christina is now signaling me to say love. But yeah, mean, love and understanding. It's been a tough couple of days watching the news, Minneapolis. It's even hard to think. We've gone so far the opposite way. Anytime I hear something that

Trump is done or ICE is done or whatever it is, that I have to feel that much more love in myself. you know what I mean? Instead of going, instead of getting pulled into it, I have to go the opposite way. So the more that happens, the more love I feel in myself.

That's great advice. Even if that is all we can do, it keeps us strong and healthy because we don't want to let our mental and physical health be affected. And we do want to be strong for when those times in our lives when we can act on the spot, know, we don't want to...

Dale (53:57.71)
Yeah, and then you're in a good place to act instead of acting from anger or frustration or whatever it is. You're acting from love. Yeah, of course. We're all human. When horrible things happen like they have been recently, it's natural to feel that.

It's okay to feel those things too.

Christina (54:21.166)
It's just that we've also become so numb because we see so many horrible things happening now and so much coming from this one particular, well, not even just him, there's other powers in the world that are just doing horrible things.

But our human brains can't focus on all of

It's so overwhelming and then it just seems like it's not getting better. you just kind of, I guess numb is the word for it. okay, I have to get on with my day and my life and my friendships and I have to find joy and I have to do this.

Yeah. That's a question. I don't know if we succeeded in answering it, but thank you. How about this one? What is Dale's top five pet peeves? Also from Laura Simpson.

Yeah, that's a big question.

Dale (55:12.366)
top five. So I come up with five pet peeves.

As many as you can and then we'll wrap things up. I'm starving. mean, are we going to make HelloFresh? Like we decided we weren't about two hours ago because we were still, our bodies were still feeding off of those disgusting chicken tenders that we made that also made us feel like crap. But now my stomach is gurgling. Do you think we should cook and then watch the last episode and a half of Heated Rivalry?

Yeah, so I can become 2 % gay.

Yeah.

yep. pet peeves. Well, I never really, I never take note of my pet peeves. I only notice them when they're happening. Yeah. I think.

Christina (56:01.998)
Well, I mean, you can direct this towards me. There must be something I do that irritates you.

Maybe your contact lenses in and about the bathroom. I find them in the sink.

The cat. She wears. And she's. I. Yeah.

Contact lenses?

That's one that just that comes in my it's not really big yeah, and you your glasses most of the time now, so it's

Christina (56:37.134)
tried really hard not to spit out some pet peeves. No, that's good. That's good. Carry on. Carry on. Good reminder. You need understanding. I understand that. I love you and I am your love.

Yeah.

We need understanding.

Dale (56:47.79)
Yeah, no, can't. Maybe I'll make a list every time they come up, but I can't.

There's gotta be something else that I do that irritates you.

Well, we said the contact lens thing.

What about when I think that something like a saying or something that I came up with it?

you mean you appropriating my clever, quips?

Christina (57:18.188)
Apparently eat fuck was you.

Okay, that's not so clever, but yes, I did.

Brilliant. I mean, it totally describes how I eat when I really eat.

Eat fucking means that you really dive into your food. you're just, you go to... No, it's... But that is definitely one of mine that you appropriated and... Does it bug me? It kind of makes me laugh.

I'm toning up my vagina.

Christina (57:40.686)
I'm...

Christina (57:46.606)
Some of the things that you come up with though, let's be real, are meant for me. they're just... They're meant me to run with.

Yeah, I like to make, yeah. That's right. That's right.

But I do try to credit you whenever possible and I feel so lucky that we met and that we became friends and that we got married because I didn't think I'd ever be married again. I just didn't think I wanted to be married. And then we have this life together and like, I don't know, there was like, I feel like it was during the pandemic.

and something changed in you. I don't know what. And it just kind of really sealed the deal. And like, it's been sheer joy.

It's been awesome.

Christina (58:40.876)
I just love everything about this and I hope we can keep it and keep it real. Keep it going. Keep doing what we love. Don't want to jinx it or anything, but like you're really awesome. I love you.

Are you closing down this podcast?

Dale (59:03.15)
I mean this specific part. It sounds like you're rapping things. That's great. Well, thank you. And I love all of those things that you said as well about you.

Wrap things up and say thank you

Christina (59:16.302)
Okay, well are we gonna eat tonight?

My stomach is really growling. I know. Hopefully these mics don't pick it up.

Christina (59:31.893)
Say goodbye

Christina (59:38.708)
I don't wanna say goodbye
